MY STORY
Published writer. Respected leader. Vivacious optimist.
Former international journalist. Global citizen.
Tech-savvy creative professional.
Relationship builder. Strategist.
Today I lead the Communications organization for Newfold Digital (formerly Web.com Group), which has encompassed leading several different areas: Social Media, PR & external media, Internal Communications, Content Marketing (blogs) and Video.
In my earlier role at Web.com I led the marketing team for the Web.com for Enterprise business division. In that role I developed and executed marketing and brand strategy, led product marketing and acquisition efforts, and headed market positioning, penetration and presence for our target audiences comprised of franchises, enterprises/corporations, and multi-brands.
Previously I was the head of marketing at a private law school, and prior to that I served as the director research communications at North Carolina A&T, where my primary goal was to elevate the profile of the university's $60M research enterprise.
Earlier in my career, I spent nearly nine years with Arizona State University's School of Earth and Space Exploration as the very first head of marketing and communications, where I focused on both internal and external brand development. I was highly effective at promoting our researchers' discoveries and advancements; I dug deep into the research to find that nugget that would have meaning to the average person and prospective students, and then I crafted engaging stories supported by visual and social elements.
Path to Marketing
I credit my journalism experience for the success I see in my current career. Working as an international journalist, my communication skills grew stronger, my question-asking skills became more refined, and my ability to strategize improved. I learned to build relationships across language and cultural divides and how to masterfully tell a story to captivate an audience.
Skilled Storyteller
I am a writer. I learned the art of storytelling and refined my writing and editing skills as an international journalist and magazine editor living abroad in Egypt and China for several years. I have written hundreds of articles ranging from science topics, specifically earth and space science, health and technology, to international current events, politics and much more. Anything that has needed to be written, printed or spoken, I churned out – from executive quotes, media alerts, press kits and releases, talking points, and video scripts, to white papers, look books, marketing plans, and sales decks, pitches, and proposals.
Making Headlines
One of my specialties is making headlines. A well-placed story can make all the difference for an organization. I enjoy crafting the perfect pitch and finding the perfect target. Between 2010 and 2015 I secured more than 700 media placements in recognized outlets. To this day I maintain a large network of journalist acquaintances, and I continue to leverage my insider knowledge to successfully pique a reporter’s interest.
Global Citizen
I read the news. I’m curious and in touch with the world. I'm a well-traveled adventurer who has journeyed to nearly all continents to pursue opportunities, from China, Egypt, and Tunisia, to Bahrain, Israel, Sierra Leone, and Belgium. I even managed a high-profile international VIP event in Sydney, Australia.
I co-founded a 501c3 organization while in college and after graduation spent time on the ground in war-ravaged Sierra Leone training our team. I persuaded journalists to write about our non-profit, convinced donors to support us, developed marketing materials, interfaced with government officials, and lived in a hut in the jungle with no running water or electricity.
Political Experience
Upon returning from Western Africa, I went into the political arena, running the Congressional campaign in three Wisconsin counties and assisting in propelling our incumbent to a successful re-election, through which I became accustomed to interacting with government officials at all levels (a skill that serves me well interacting in the boardroom with C-suite execs).
Life At Home
My husband and my two boys and I enjoy traveling, hiking, camping and fishing. We say "yes" to adventures of all flavors - white water rafting, ziplining, spear diving, scuba, you name it. We love being on the water in our free time. I am an avid reader and learner, I prioritize fitness and love tennis.
Thanks for reading my story! To back up all this interesting stuff, I created a robust portfolio that I encourage you to explore.
